Hi,
I have not been involved or interested in animal cruelty before but I have recently been told of a farm near me that produces Halal meat.  I pass these fields of sheep every day, on my way to work, that would be having their throats slit soon.  I have done some research and it seems that the animal would suffer have its throat cut. Do you complain about this practice?  Am I missing something that you know, do the animals suffer?

Hi,
I have been following the animal rights movement for many years now and i am emailing you to ask for help.
I have recently set up a web-forum aimed at the UK to help animal rights/alf supporters up to date with the movement. We are not encouraging any illegal activities, we are mealy a representative for our UK supporters! We are a good, and safe place for members of any age to come and discuss animal rights issues within the UK, and as for topics etc. I would be more than happy for my 10 year old child to come and view the forum (if i had a child).
We were wondering if you could help us by giving us a link from your site, if you are prepared to do this, then we will set up a supporters section containing a link to you, and information about you.
The forum can be found at http://www.alf-uk.co.nr/, you can not view the contents until you register, but this only takes a moment.
Please take a look and let me know. I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you for your time.

just thought you might like to know that I have already written to my MP, Linda Gilroy, Plymouth Sutton ward, about this edm and she has written back acknowledging the importance of this but refusing to sign it because she feels it is worded in a way that criticises the amount of time the government spend debating the hunting bill.  I know of course that this is just a feeble excuse on her part not to sign it, but perhaps others should be prepared before they contact their MPs incase they make the same excuse.  Meanwhile I will try and contact Frank Field who drafted the EDM and perhaps he can draft another one without mentioning the hunting bill?

Hi
After reading your excellent articles regarding L'Oreal on your website, I wanted to ask a question.
For me it’s a genuine dilemma rather than a challenging question.
As L'Oreal now own The Body Shop.. Do you…
A) Boycott the Body Shop products because they are now part of L'Oreal?
Or do you
B) Continue to shop at The Body Shop to support non-animal tested products.
Would a boycott of Body Shop products show up in L'Oreal's figures and statsheets (which every business live by) that non-animal tested products don't sell as much as animal tested products. Does that make sense?
It reminds me of the issue with countries that have started whaling again for instance Iceland.
Some people think you should boycott going to that country because of that, whereas some think you should make an effort to go there to support the whalewatching industry (and my wife and I did a couple of years ago just before whaling was allowed again). Otherwise the whaling community have more of a stronger argument against the whalewatching industry not being as profitable as made out.
Could boycotts of products such as cosmetics be similar?
I can sort of see both sides to the argument and I'm curious to know what you think if you don't mind answering.
I look forward to hearing from you
Best wishes
Paul

I am writing this email to say the work you do is fantastic and i wish i could do more myself I am a member of S.A.R.A (scottish animal rights activists) and nothing offends me morethan the idea of some pencil necked scientist torturing innocent animals for the so called advancement of the human race, more like advancing their research grants. If there is anything i can ever do on a more pro-active front please feel free to contact me and keep up the good work.

Hi,
You don't know me & I'm not very important but have been a vegan for years & try in my own way to do what I can to have as little impact on the planet as possible. I stumbled upon your site the other day & I have to say I hadn't realized how bad things have got with regards to animal cruelty & the oppression of minorities etc. I don't know why I'm mailing you really, its just that I wanted to say I'm glad there are people like you out there trying to redress the balance & restore a bit of sanity. I'll try to be a bit more proactive in the future

I just found your website and I think what you are doing is great! I read the negative emails sent to you and I do think most of those people have mental health problems. Animals have their own destinies and have as much right to be here as we do. I think it is disgusting how man “kind” treats something so vulnerable and naive. I had an account set up on Bebo which I used to try and show people what actually happens to animals. I used fox hunting and animals used for human consumption as an example. I got a lot of mixed views on that site and even had people who felt so strongly about hunting start on me personally, calling me names and such.
You would think that they were proud of there lifestyle. I found it hard to comprehend but I find so much about human behaviour hard to comprehend so I just tried to ignore it. I think your website is great. It is good to open peoples eyes to cruelty although not everyone wants to see the truth. Keep up the good work and try not to be disheartened by the negative feedback. Like I said before I think these people have mental problems and I’m sure their violent natures leak out into their relationships with other people. They’ll all end up in jail soon enough for killing their mothers or something! Thanks for your time…..

I just wanted to mention about the 'Animals' programme last night on channel 4. It was a good effort but it was a shame that they did not air more of the scientific argument against animal testing and the way that billions of pounds wasted on testing cancer drugs on mice in which the disease of cancer is totally different to that in human beings.

Someone interviewed on the programme also said that animals do not have the power to dread things, i.e. anticipate. This is incorrect. How come so many animals fled early because they sensed the tsunami coming in asia. They have more of an ability to aniticipate than humans because they can sense what we are not able to.

Hi

I noticed this headline on your site linking to the shows on More 4. I saw the Animals doc and the one about the slimey Mr Fester/Festing. Although the documentary was about the radical element of AR, I thought it gave quite a balanced view and put in lots of great quotes from people in our movement.

Well done on your great website.

Hi friends, family, loved ones, anyone who will read this…
I have just got back from a conference in Canada with ‘People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ and am more inspired than ever to make a difference for the voiceless billions who suffer at the hands of man every single year.
I couldn’t believe it when I heard that some 45 BILLION animals are slaughtered for food in the world every year! Can you get your head round that? 45 BILLION! And the animal abuse doesn’t stop with the animal products we eat, abuse is live and well every time man comes into contact with living creatures in the name of profit, in the clothes we wear the animals we use for entertainment and the animals in laboratories.
These animals are routinely tortured, starved, beaten, mutilated, skinned alive…tortured beyond your wildest nightmares…I saw the evidence with my own eyes and weep as I write this. I know many will think that I am exaggerating, but let me put it this way, if these things were not commonplace, PETA would be sued and would be no more. The abuses I witnessed were not the worst abuses, because they are not allowed to show the worst and believe me, I find it hard to imagine worse.
Logic dictates that because of sheer numbers, neglect is certainly inevitable and cruelty is likely and commonplace. It is standard practise to mutilate animals without anaesthetic for eggs, meat and dairy and it is absolutely necessary that life become a by-product for these things. Life, a by-product…this is insanity. When life has no worth and is actually something to be disposed of, does anybody really believe that these creatures are treated with respect and compassion? They aren’t worth the time it takes to be compassionate.
My first step since the conference is to do something I was too scared to do, before I went to Toronto. I am contacting all of you and urge you to pass this mail on. I was so scared that people would see me as some preaching vegan who told everyone what they should, or shouldn’t do. I was scared that people would hate me for speaking the truth so I only spoke out when asked…because I felt it was wrong to speak out otherwise. Now I know it would be wrong to keep my mouth shut because I must be the voice of all beings who I see suffering, both human and non human. I might be all they have. Injustice is never something to keep quiet about.
I send this for all those animals who are victims of horrific abuses, mutilated for the sake of taste…beaks, teeth, tails snipped off and castrations, all without anaesthetic. Animals crammed into cages so small they can barely move, so crippled from genetic modification they can barely walk, going insane with the boredom and then for their pains, they are sent to die, in terror and often, agonising pain. In my mind, this isn’t just wrong, this is evil. Even those who ‘live’ better lives, die in terror and often agony.
I send this for all those trapped inside the confines of factory farms, in laboratories, those creatures caged and used in entertainment, for they are the voiceless who live and die for our own selfish gains. NO living being wants to die, all beings flee from the knife and all animals who die inside a slaughterhouse, die in terror…this is a fact which no one who has seen an animal slaughtered can deny.
We have to ask ourselves, do we want these atrocities to happen in our names? And shouldn’t we also be asking ourselves at least to take a look at what happens to the animals to get them to our table, or our wardrobe or our television sets? Don’t we at least owe them this much? If we watch and we see and then we decide we feel it is ok, then so be it, but I know, that everyone who is included in this mailing list is a compassionate and caring human being who would never want to support such cruelties.
For me, making a conscious decision not to support animal suffering is a question of integrity. I would not torture, maim, mutilate and then kill an animal for the sake of my taste buds and I do not expect another human being to do all that for me. If you think it would be painful to take a peak at what happens to these animals, then imagine how awful it must be for those animals who live it…and die it. Animal factories are hell on earth for these animals…hell on Earth.
These living creatures who are suffering right now need all the voices they can get because they have nothing and no one without the people who open their eyes to their suffering and start shouting about it. This is a violence all of us can STOP and I hope you will watch the video link I have sent you and see the cruelties we all support, or have supported, on a daily basis without even realising it.
Thank you for your time and I wish you all a compassionate future…
Bernie

Hi,
I'm hoping myself, wife and 2 teenage sons can help inform the mass so called friendly people about us. Myself as a young Anarchist punk back 20+ years back joined marches, demonstrations and enjoyed handing out info/leaflets often with true upsetting pictures to all willing to be enlightened and hear the truth. At 17 moved away from area and friend in Weymouth to Kendal, Over time met my now wife settled down to family life, drifted away from our aim, but often having a lost/missing feeling in me for letting myself and all poor animals whatever its Pain DOWN... Thankfully my youngest son has been asking questions as I did at his age about Who/Why/How animals still in 2005 receive so much pain, Can he do or help them in any way. So as a family we talked and all decided together we will help our helpless loving animals in any way needed..Please point us in some areas we can help out..I loved handing out ALF info/leaflets face to face seeing them understand why the pain must stop and how they can also help with little effort or time.
True details and often shocking pictures made people look then ask Who/Where/Why would this happen..So as a young family need to help, I would love to purchase info/leaflets handouts and pinup posters to flood our small town with and be available to inform or provide info when asked when handing out..Moving onto bigger things and places..Hoping you will help us help you do the right thing. Many thanks please get us going ASAP..

Dear Sir,
I am wondering if you know of any 'militant' organisations in the North-West of England that are inclined towards a more 'direct' approach with regards to solving the problem of vermin getting off on killing animals for their own sadistic pleasure. I have a house on the street where I live where the family actively breed dogs for fighting and hunting. the house is decked out in the usual pro-hunt posters, and i find this highly offensive,as i am true animal lover. These 'people' are the architypal pro-hunt freaks: skinheads with fascist tattoos and nothing between their ears.I am becoming more inclined to do something myself, but i fear for the safety of my family if they know who i am. if you could supply any addresses this would be most appreciated.
Many Thanks,

Dear sir/madam,

In my view the people behind all the cruelty to animals and also to the lower members of humanity are of course the Jews. How can we ever have a better kinder world for all species of animals when these old fashioned folk think they know all the answers to the world and are allowed to impose their crazy attitudes upon this world. They think that humanity is totally above the rest of the animal kingdom but in my opinion this is not true.

If we are to begin a new age of enlightenment and liberation then these old hat and morally judgemental folk will need to be at first strictly controlled.

And their financial power in this world is just very disgusting. Is that all they see in our world money and animals are here merely to be exploited in their view.

I have been interested in environmentalism most of my life and I consider myself to be an animal lover. I once watched one or two anti semitic films and it got discovered and it went around the neighbourhood and the Jews there said that they wanted me to die from "fat around the heart" even though I had never harmed any of them and I don't want to. This was 8 years ago and they are still treating me as if I'm shite. How disgusting how arrogant how intolerant.

Why should I be subjected to all the robbery assault harrasment that I have to this day been forced to endure. Nothing I say will make any difference to them and they have said that they will never forgive me for being anti semitic.

I know that I am a caring and compassionate human animal myself and I don't think it's right that I should be "driven out of town" in this way.

They said also that they would follow me to the "ends of the earth" so I will have to get away quietly and use a new name. etc.

Yours sincerely,

G. Murray

Hi,
on saturday it was my first time at a protest, outside the newchurch guinea pig death camp. I felt extremely emotional all day, what a great bunch of lovely caring people. the police however, caused trouble, they were brutal, patronising, unprofessional, they instigated a couple of scuffles, definitely not provoked by the peaceable people, fighting for animal rights. I am completely sickened and disturbed by the 'pigs' attitude. How can they behave so unjustly, you could almost feel them itching for a fight, to cast us in a bad light, spread rumours. They certainly are scum. Is there nothing we can do about their attitude? I suppose the government have too much money to lose, to stop vivisection, so they want to discredit us, make us look like thugs. Part of me knows the police wont change their attitude, but that's made me want to fight for animal rights even more, to prove to the police, the country and the world that vivisection is amoral, and totally unnecessary. Also ive just been looking on the net for any info on these poor, beautiful guinea pigs, and came across a site called ananova (po box 36, leeds, ls11 9yj) Bloody pathetic and rubbish, there was no one in the fields at all to my knowledge!!! Whats that site all about??????????
Anyway, sorry to ramble im very passionate about animals. Keep up the good work. Thank you for restoring (some) of my faith in human beings. Sarah Richards

Dear Sir
I have just recieved my copy of uncaged magazine and would like to let your readers know about the barbaric experiments that are being done to millions of animals in labs all over the world. From my source Uncaged, I believe that Proctor And Gamble are probably the worst for cruelty ,this is why I am boycotting anything at all that they produce. Also IAMS pet food which i believe is part of the same group. I have read things from uncaged and other animal rights people that I find heartbreaking and do not understand how any human being can treat animals this way. I feel that all animals have the right to live as safe as they can be on this planet. Surely in this day and age more and more people are finding animal experiments unacceptable so if I may suggest that we put pen to paper and let the government and other powers that be know that this cruelty will not be tolerated. I, for one will definately boycott PROCTOR AND GAMBLE and IAMS and I would urge all like minded people to do the same. Perhaps between us we may be able to stop this barbaric, inhumane and unacceptable cruelty.
Thank you

Just catching your site for the 1st time from the eastern US. Phenomenal! One cannot be too active - in every sense - in this movement. I have been an animal rights "activist" since age 8 when my elementary school showed a gory film of the Japanese bombing whales under the guise of food and science. 35 years later, I'm more furious by the day.

I've worked my entire professional life in the non-profit environmental movement. I got into that movement because of my convictions toward the natural environment. It has taken many years to have it drilled through my thick skull that most people in the "environmental" movement care only about the human environment. They share the same common characteristics of greed and blatant cruelty against all creatures but one that everyone else does. Let's face it: it does us no good to save habitat only for humans; the thought of that is morally repugnant. Too many "environmental" groups favor hunting for "management," and I find that a majority of "enviornmentalists" liberally eat meat as if it was going out of style. I am therefore gravitating increasingly toward the animal rights movement and will continue to do so to the utmost of my ability. In these parts, like everywhere, it is an uphill struggle.
Animal abuse exists at all levels, of course; but I believe, perhaps naively, that the American conscsience is particularly ill-suited to take these issues on. Americans, after all, having it all-but written into their constitution the god-given right to self-comfort, ease, and convenience in every aspect of life, riches at anyone's expense, and a life of complete decadence and self-indulgence at the expense of substance or meaning. Indeed, (believe it or not) I have even heard a recent argument that advocating on behalf of animals here is unpatriotic. Most people I talk to feel insulted about being approached on these issues, and will forcefully strive to keep from learning anything about them for fear that it may cause them to reevaluate their wasteful lifestyles.

I look forward to keeping in tune with your work and writings.

After reading through your site may I say that I would truly like to thank you. Not only are you campaigning for the rights of animals but you have also educated me a fair bit. Some organisations say "down with animal cruelty" but they don't provide such information. I am not a vegetarian, I accept the fact that I'm only human. I do however believe that cruelty to animals for personal gain is wrong, especially something as piffling and insignificant as cosmetics.I'd like to ask, do you participate in active liberations? Not just signing petitions and writing to the government but breaking into commercial laboratories and physically liberating them. After some consideration, I've decided I'd like to donate my resources to the cause. The thought of the torture makes my blood boil, and with an acute feeling of blind hatred I would seriously like to partake in such activities. I realise you may not condone such acts but could you possibly point me to a link of some sort that might be able to help?
I'm done with sitting around writing. All I really need is a list of alledged animal testing buildings in the UK. I'd take it from there. In any case, thank you for opening my eyes on the subject, Mirthin

Hi my names Hailey, I am 20 years old and have supported the rights of animals all my life. I have four rats and they mean the world to me (they are very spoilt!). I want to adopt a dog and would love to give a beagle that has been liberated from a hell hole such as huntingdon Life Sciences. Is there a need for homes for these animals and how can I find out about giving an animal this second chance at life that they are entitled to.
Kind regards
Hailey

I have just visited your site for the first time. I have been a vegetarian for over a year now and have always been disgusted by the abhorrent way that humans treat animals. What makes people think that they are any better than any other living, breathing, feeling creature on this earth? I read some of the other emails sent in by others who also feel strongly about the pressing need to liberate animals; from their cages, yes, but also from human control, and therefore cruelty. After clicking on the picture gallery button, the ensuing ten minutes I spent staring at my computer monitor in horror made me cry and made me even more determined to continue to make people aware of the appalling, grotesque and barbaric actions brought against animals.
So to everyone out there, all over the world, who is fighting for the rights and lives of animals, keep doing it - we can make a difference!

I will gladly send you any bits I get passed on to me. I get lots, at times. I have just found your site and it's brilliant, so much care and time has been put into it and it shows. Thank you so much for caring. Thank you on behalf of millions and millions of animals.

Thank-you for taking the time to stand up for the innocent, I believe society can only be judged by how it cared for the children , the elderly and as stewarts of this land. We have reached the the depths of human degradation as we have lost our humility as caretakers of this planet. The multi-nationals will continue to rape and pillage every vestige of creation in the pursuit of self. One person can cause a ripple in this insanity and with enough ripples a wave of change. Once more unto the breach dear friends once more...

Hey,
Hope all is well with you! I support your website 100%. I have written feedback before to some of those uneducated scientists who wrote in. Anyway I'm an active animal rights person here in Oregon USA. I too have been waiting for the decline of HLS, not too many people are aware of the situation here. Anyway, there is a newspaper columnist here called Ann Landers, maybe you have heard of her?If you could have your readers write to her and her sister Abby, then the whole nation will start to be aware of it. This is just an idea, here are the websites I found for them.
http://www.creators.com/lifestyle_writetheauthor.cfm?pg=write&columnsname=ala http://www.uexpress.com/dearabby/viewda.cfm
Both websites should have access for people to email them. If they get a bunch of emails about HLS, they are almost sure to write about it. I know Ann Landers is an animal rights activist as well. I want these bastards out of business!!!!! I have just graduated in archaeology and I should be in Europe digging soon. I would love to go to an HLS protest in England, please keep me posted!!! I am now 56 years old and tend to sometimes think that I have, in my lifetime, experienced, or am aware of, every aspect of the human abuse and misuse of animals. Yet, I found myself today, standing in a newsagents, feeling physically sick at the trumpeted headlines in the "Daily Mail," the celebratory message that mankind had managed to overcome the gene barrier in the breeding of species to provide humans with spare body parts. I felt and still feel a deep sense of revulsion at not only the breeding of the four piglets pictured, but at the depravity of the mind that even envisaged this as a reality.
An even deeper revulsion at the fact that some bastard, sick to the core, has even given them names redolent of Christmas Time.Noel and Star, I believe were two, although I must admit to having been so full of horror, that I found the detail difficult to take in. I remember clearly, when I was at school, being told that there was no limit to mans knowledge and that progress is a continuous and infinite thing. I cannot remember at what time in my life, I understood that mans depravity and lack of morality is also limitless and clearly knows no boundaries. So, what do we do my friends, about this latest excursion into the scientific cess-pit. Be angry and stay angry. Be militant and stay militant.
By whatever means, we must stop this now. We must fight and we must protest and we must free these victims of the filth and scum that profess to work in the name of "scientific progress." we must educate and we must not allow anyone to claim not to understand that part of a sentient being, removed to lengthen the life of a human creature, always means the death of that being and as such, breaches every moral and natural boundary. We are supposed to be the higher species and yet we do not recognise responsibilities to anything except ourselves. As I write this I am ashamed of my humanity.
I am not writing from a detatched, moralistic "high ground." I am suffering from heart failure and surgery is high on the list of options. I have made it clear that I will not, under any circumstances accept any part which has entailed the suffering and death of another species and my partner fully supports me in this. But this is only a starting point.
Surely the time has now come when we say,"We will not accept this, because it is wrong?" Surely, we must now be prepared to carry the fight to the scum that are responsible for this horror? In the name of God and in the name of humanity, do we have a choice?

This is a response to Biceptboy54@aol.com who sent a message On Sunday February 11th 2001.
I find that attitude perplexing and scary, that this 6'5" 260lb person can come to the conclusion that he is so superior to animals. What exactly do humans do thats so great. How many "stupid little monkeys" create atom bombs, and chemical weapons. We are more intelligent than animals, but then we have defined what 'intelligence' means, so its hardly an umbiased definition. We ARE animals, funished with large brains in order to survive, just like birds fly and fish swim, we think. To place ourselves above animals is exteme arrogance, and has no basis in reality. At the end of the day does our vastly seperior intelligence really get us anywhere? No not really. As we are discovering, the planet is teetering on the brink of ecological meltdown because we need cars, and mobile phones. Not only are we destroying ourselves but we are going to take the world with us. Oh, arent we great, big round of aplause for the humans, havent we done well.
The great thing is though, that when the perverbial shit does hit the fan, life will go on, we may not, but the planet will survive. It will rid itself of the stupid humans, and equilibrium will be restored, amen. We are not better than any other organism, and i dont see why we need to feel we are. Whats wrong with being a part of the world instead of trying to separate ourselves from it by saying were different. As a species we need to be less egocentric and realise nature is more powerful than all our bombs, and she will fight back, and we will be the losers. Like george harrison wrote. Life goes in within us and without us.
Regards.
john.

I have read with horror some of the e-mails to the Liberation Magazine. I cannot comprehend the minds of those who support the abuse of the non-human species who share this planet with us. We have no right to imprison kill and torture helpless animals for pleasure, profit or fraudulent science. We all have the right to live out our lives in harmony with our environment. The planet is big enough for all of us. However ignorance and vested interest reigns supreme in humans, this begs the question what drives the human being, answer money and power over the vulnerable.

Hi,
I just wanted to let you know that I think your site is fantastic! I also have a website, www.freetheanimals.com I would love to put your site on our links page, if that's all right with you. I commend you for your dedication and efforts to the animal rights movement. When I see people like myself, with such strong convictions, it only reinforces my dedication. I related to what you wrote in the beginning of your home page, about people who are against animal rights. It is so hard to understand how people can be against animal rights, but I have come to accept that there are some people who simply have no compassion in their hearts, and probably never will. But, I know that most people do, and that is why people like you and I will never give up on what we beleive in! You can e-mail me at edita@freetheanimals.com to let us know if you would like to link to our site also.
Sincerely,
Edita Birnkrant

I am not over-zealous in my attempt to understand "Dr." Berens' work; the breakthroughs he anticipates or the horrific cruelty inflicted upon puppies. Why? Do I believe the ends justify the means? Am I a cold heartless human, bereft of any compassion or empathy for Gods' creatures? Certainly I must be a Republican! Or am I so apathetic that it does not matter to me? No way Jose'! It makes me sick to my stomach to learn of the atrocities this man and others are capable of committing. But when I learn that knowledge garnered from this these experiments will save the life of my mother(sic).... and your sister.... and the school nurses' husband, the bakers' wife, the old woman down the street, ad infinitum........ part of me is accepting. I can not imagine that any of these doctors experience ANY glee or have fun doing these procedures. Yes, they may seem barbaric.... ha! they are barbaric and I am sure that these animals experience pain and the whole range of emotions!!!!
Is there any way to do this without the use of higher Mammals? The Institute has funded Dr. Berens. Let's hope that none of the Staff at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona has to give their children' pets for Dr. Berens' experiments! Poor little puppy....... Yes, you're a good boy.... such a good boy... sit! sit! roll over... good boy!! lay down... lay down.... atta boy!! good puppy....let the doctors drill holes in your skull....you'll be OK.... just lay down...close your eyes..... It is a good thing you don't understand the word... cancer. All you can understand is you are sick and your head hurts and you don't know why... why would anyone would want do this to you........ I have written to the appropriate people to express my outrage and disappointment!
Thank you

I live in oldtown florida u.s.a and i wish we had a humane society, during hunting season the hunters run their walkerdogs to chase deer, if the dogs run the deer the dogs live if they dont some of the hunters leave their dogs out in the woods to starve to death and some shoot them rite on the side of the highway, some of the dogs are so skinny i dont see how they can run a deer no less run. and these hunters dont see any animal cruelty, id like to feed these owner a cup of food a day and see how long they last running the game and those poor deer are ran to death, i almost go flatten by a deer last hunting season that was being chased by dogs in a still hunt area, that allows no dogs at all,i think they should stop doghunting for deer and as far as your organazation is concerned you have good and bad points just like any animal organazations, i use to show dogs and my animals did not live their life in cages, they were treated better than some kids, for anyone to say what you people do is wrong is not correct but i do belive that 2wrongs dont make it rite either, you can be animal activist with out violence, ending up in jail only hurts the animals you are trying to protect in the end, you cant protect them if your in jail,

From: dartanyen@ntlworld.com - On February 12th 2001.
Firstly, don't you think that "you people" is a bit of a hypocrytical generalisation given that you wrote an e-mail to the liberation magazine complain about generalisations made by those against hunting? Secondly, you completely avoid the fact that the vast majority of hunting in Britain is merely for recreational purposes. This is what gives hunting a 'bad rap', this is what most people morally disagree with. Do you honestly need to hunt to survive? Does the average hunter rely on hunting as a source of income? No, the average hunter is part of the 'horsey set'.
Thirdly, how could someone who has 'been raised hunting or fishing' possibly have any sort of objective perspective of the subject?
Finally, please do not patronise us. You talk to us as if we are young children, just because we do not share your views: "you just havent realized that for some people it is what keeps them alive." I think most people have realised this don't you? I don't think we are exactly the least socially aware.

The following email was sent in reply to a mail from msed_up@my-deja.com
Regarding your e mail to Liberation, thank you for being open and honest and putting your argument together is a lucid and polite manner, unlike some e mails received.

First I can assure you that I know all about MS. My own wife suffers from it and has done so for 25 years having been diagnosed at aged 28. Yes it is an appalling disease and has changed our lives totally. I no longer work to enable me to look after her full time. Interestingly she is also a vegetarian.

However both she and I oppose all animal experiments in the name of research and she has no medication at all. The reality is that her condition has remained unchanged for 10 years. This may be luck. We are not convinced that things would have been any different with medication. Others we know with MS have, inspite of steroid treatment, interferon and ACTH deteriorated faster.

We consider that man and animals were created with equal status and that it is immoral to subject them to suffering in laboratories. I am sure that you have seen the terrible treatment of them in HLS labs on their web site.

I openly admit to assisting HLS in lobbying and jaming the systems of the Royal Bank of Scotland and Stevens who finance this cruelty

I have no problem with experiments on humans. These could be volunteers or perhaps prisoners. The former would have the choice, the latter have offended society so should be punished. The difference is that the laboratory animal does not have choice and has committed no crime.

You ask "who are you to state categorically that the suffering that people with diseases does not merit the use of rodents for research?" My answer is someone who knows and understands MS and has moral values. What right do you have to expect society to provide you with a cure or a drug to alleviate your suffering?

I have mixed feelings about prolonging lifespan by pre natal screening or medical treatment. We are born and take our chance in this world.

Before you respond I will tell you that I also have a chronic condition, haemophilia which has caused me lots of problems. Many of my colleagues died from HIV and I have hepatitis through infected blood supplies. Animal research did not avoid these scenarios.

Clive.

Thanks for the email, we (4) were there today (wet & still cold). We were there when Ken (I think that is his name was arrested. I was talking to a couple of policemen at the time and they informed me he had been warned that he would be arrested if he used the loud hailer as locals had complained and they had to uphold the law. Other people (john from Billericay) were also warned of the same. Later when our numbers had grown nothing was done when loud hailers were used. I remarked on this to the reporter from the East Anglian and she said she had asked about this and was told there was never a problem with using loud hailers, the reason for the arrest of Ken was for incitement and abusive language. Well what a load of rubbish. I heard as everyone else did what was said. This was our first time at a protest and was wondering why/how the law can change so easily and why don't the press pick up on this. I should imagine this is a question you have asked many times. You have our continuing support and will endeavour to attend protests when possible.
Keep up the good work.

Some time ago, I e-mailed you regarding the goat, sheep and pot-bellied pig that were being kept at the above pub for the "amusement" of the patrons' children. You kindly contacted the RSPCA, as they had totally ignored my call, and they visited the pub and informed you that they were "reasonably happy" with the conditions that the animals lived in. I haven't been able to visit them since, but yesterday I went to visit them and they are still there in exactly the same disgusting conditions (very poor shelter, small compound (which is a mud bath) and only a small amount of wet, dirty straw). I went there again today with some bread and apples as, although I realise they must be getting fed, I was not able to see any sign of food and I also believe that the pig stops the sheep and goat from getting fed properly.
In fact, yesterday, I saw the goat trying to eat some of the dirty straw and, to my knowledge, this is something that goats don't normally do. Whilst feeding them (including the pig, of course), the pig decided to take a chunk out of my partner's arm. She tried to get the pig to let go by tempting it with a piece of bread, held to one side of her arm, but to no avail. She was finally obliged to forcibly pull her arm out of its jaws. The injury on her arm is pretty horrendous, despite the fact that she was wearing a thick sweater and jacket. What happened has made us believe that the reason the sheep and goat are so terrified of the pig is not just because of its aggressive attitude.
We are quite sure they get bitten if they don't move fast enough (which must be pretty difficult in such a confined space). Although our interests lie with the animals, we are also concerned that the owners of the pub seem totally oblivious to the fact that children are able to put their hands through the fence (either from the road or from the pub garden)and parents are not usually pleased when their child returns from stroking the animals with one hand missing! Obviously, we have no argument with the pig as we are quite sure it is also unhappy. However, anyone with any sense should know that a pig should not be kept with sheep and goats. The sheep and goat should be somewhere where they are not intimidated 24 hours a day and where they can graze (rather than standing around in a mud bath). I would be grateful if you would use your influence to try and get something done about this situation.
Many thanks for your help.
